Am I still eligible to apply if I am not a U.S. citizen?


Yes. You may apply if you are not a U.S. citizen.




Am I still eligible to apply if I am not a legal U.S. resident?


Yes. You may apply if you are not a legal resident.​




Am I still eligible to apply if I am not eligible for the FAFSA?


Yes. Please contact us to see what documents may be substituted in place of the FAFSA student aid report on your application.




How do I know if I qualify as low-income?


Income limits are determined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) based on the county you live in and the number of people in your household. You can check the current limits for this school year here.




Am I eligible to apply for a scholarship if I will be a full-time graduate or postgraduate student?


No. The scholarship award can not be used for graduate or post-graduate studies.




Am I eligible to apply for a scholarship if I will be attending a trade school or technical school?


Yes. The scholarship funds may be used towards a trade school or technical school.




Am I eligible to apply for a scholarship if I will be studying abroad?


No. The scholarship award can not be used for studying abroad.





Application

I'm not sure what school I will be attending in the fall. What do I write on my application?


Please list your first choice. If you proceed to the interview round, you will have the option to change your school.




I do not know how much financial aid I will be receiving. What do I write on my application?


Please estimate what you expect to receive.




Where do I find the application?


You may complete the application online here. You will need to make an account with SurveyMonkey in order to complete the application.





Letters of Rec

What if my recommenders wants to keep my letter of recommendation confidential?


Your recommender may choose to mail or email your letter of recommendation to our office directly. You will need to upload this document instead to complete the task for you online application. ​It is your responsibility to ensure the letter of recommendation is either emailed or postmarked by March 31st.




I'm a renewal applicant. Can I use the same recommendation letters as last year?


No. You must submit two new letters of recommendation. Letters must be dated within the last 12 months. Uploading letters from a previous year will result in automatic disqualification.




I'm a renewal applicant. Can I ask the same recommender to write a new letter for me?


Yes. The same recommender may write a new letter of recommendation for you. Letters must be dated within the last 12 months.





Transcript

I don't have an official transcript. Can I submit an unofficial copy instead?


No. We can not accept unofficial transcripts. You must provide a copy of your official transcript in order for your application to be considered complete.




Can I email a copy of my transcript instead?


We can not accept scanned copies of transcripts sent directly by students. However, If your school offers an electronic delivery option, you may send the official link to transcripts@hearthstonehousing.org.




My transcript doesn't show 3 semesters. What should I submit?


You will need to submit your official transcript from your current school as well as the one you attended prior.

For example, college freshmen will need to submit their transcripts from both their current college as well as their high school. Transfer students will need to submit their transcripts from both their current college as well as the college they attended prior.




Where do I mail my official transcript?

I'm a renewal student. Can I reuse a transcript submitted for a prior application as part of my 3 semesters of information?


No, the official transcript submitted for a prior application would not have the official semester 2 grades for that school year. Those courses would have been in-progress at the time of application. Please submit a new official transcript.





Renewal Applicants

I'm a renewal applicant. Can I use the same personal statement as last year?


No. You must provide a new personal statement that updates the committee on your growth, accomplishments and experiences over the last year. Uploading a personal statement from previous years will result in automatic disqualification




I'm a renewal applicant. Can I use the same recommendation letters as last year?


No. You must submit two new letters of recommendation. Letters must be dated within the last 12 months. Uploading letters from a previous year will result in automatic disqualification.

Interview

When will I know if I move on to the interview round?


You will receive an email informing you if you have moved on to the interview round.




How do I schedule my interview?


You will receive email communication with instructions on how to do so.




What if I am unavailable on the days offered for the interview?


You will be provided alternate days and times depending on the availability of the scholarship committee member's schedule.




Who will be interviewing me?


A member of the scholarship committee will conduct your interview. Scholarship committee members volunteer their time to review and score your application as well as conduct the interview.




What can I expect during the interview?


You will receive a phone call from a scholarship committee member at your scheduled time. The interview will last approximately 15-20 minutes. The interviewer will ask you questions that will expand on your application and personal statement.




Where do I go for the interview?


The interview will be held by phone. You do not have to travel anywhere.





Award

When will I know if I received an award and how much I was awarded?


You will be notified by email towards the end of June.




If I am awarded a scholarship, where will the funds be sent?


Your award will be mailed to you directly at the address provided on your application. You will have a chance to update this mailing address if you are selected.




If I am awarded a scholarship, when will I receive the funds?


Your award will be mailed to you in two disbursements: The first half will be sent during the fall semester and the second half will be sent during the spring semester. You will receive an email with more details.




If I am awarded a scholarship, can it be used to purchase textbooks?


Yes, you may use your scholarship towards textbooks, supplies and other similar expenses.




If I am awarded a scholarship, can it be used for studying abroad?


No. The scholarship award can not be used for studying abroad.
